"I didn’t think it’d make a friend
so soon." I say to my mother
as she places a glass bouquet
next to the first and a surprised
laugh escapes her bereaved lips,
simply from my strained way 
of lamenting: I didn’t think father
and grandmother would die
within a month of each other.
